Budget/Financial Management Counseling

A Budget and Financial Management counseling session is all about helping you develop a plan for your future. We will create a step-by-step action plan for you that uses specific strategies to help you achieve your goals. Everyone’s action plan will be different, because it’s unique to your individual situation. Before your counseling session, there are some things you need to know so that you’ll be best prepared.

 

What to Expect in the Counseling Session

 

During your session, we will be doing a thorough review of your financial situation. This will include:

  • Your debts
  • Your assets
  • Your monthly financial commitments

 

When you are able to look at these figures, your financial picture will become more clear. A Personal Finance Counselor will be able to identify what percentage of your income you are spending on housing, food, hobbies, etc. and will be better able to suggest ways that you can cut costs.

 

Your counselor will make a variety of recommendations. These can include, suggestions like cutting your cable bill, going out to eat less, having a large yard sale, and so forth. If credit card debt is a big part of your struggle, your counselor may recommend that you join a Debt Management Program. This is completely up to you.

 

How to Prepare

 

The best way to prepare for your counseling session is to have bills and statements available. It is not mandatory, but having these items will make your conversation with a counselor more efficient and will make it easier for us to help you.
It’s also a good idea to do your own thinking and reviewing of your finances before your session. This allows you to be in the right frame of mind and to go into the session with clear goals in mind.

 

After the Session

 

Hopefully, after your session you will have a better idea of where you stand and what you need to do to get on track financially. Your counselor will have made a variety of suggestions for you and you will have created, together, an action plan for moving forward.

 

At this point, it will be up to you to take the next step. You will have the opportunity to implement the suggestions and changes that your counselor suggested. If you need additional assistance, CHOEDC will continue to be available as a resource on your journey to a healthier financial future.
